The Deus Ex effect

When it comes to PC video games, the original Deus Ex comes in a close second, right behind to The Fallout series of games which has completely filled the first place slot on my list. The original Half-Life is still fighting for the second place spot too, but enough about that (saving that argument for another time). The reasoning behind it's high rank on my list is because of the experience that it gave the player in which no game before had ever done.

It was the first game that I ever played where you, the player, could complete objectives in numerous ways, including stealth, sniping, heavy frontal assault, dialogue, or engineering and computer hacking. This level of freedom was backed up by the game having levels, characters, and puzzles be designed with significant redundancy, so that during a single play-through of the game the player will not miss large sections of dialogue, areas, and other awesome content. At times, even when you are encouraged against using deadly force -stun vs stab-, aspects of the story can change depending on how bloody violent or sneakily non-violent you choose to be. "The sky's the limit" so-to-speak and because of the affect this game had on me, my view of what a game should be was changed.

Depth of story, vibrant environments and versatility of gameplay are all but gone from the mainstream video game scene, replaced by linear paths, confined gameplay modes and stupid gimmicks. It saddens me that I might never get to see a game as good as Deus Ex ever again. Every damned molecule in my body wishes that game developers would look back to the past for inspiration and start making fantastic video game experiences again, like they used to. Here's to hoping for better things, but until then I will see what the present has to offer.

... Deus Ex: Human Revolution review coming soon :)

Oh and here's a shitty but funny DE video:
